As a Medicaid Orthodontist we get a lot of questions about Medicaid coverage and how it works for getting braces. It is important to understand that Medicaid will only cover orthodontic braces for children under 21 and will only pay for braces if they decide it is medically necessary.
Our initial exam is a screening appointment only, not the approval for braces. A patient must have a certain number of points on the DentaQuest Score Sheet in order to be considered for Medicaid to pay for their Orthodontic treatment. Per Medicaid's Managed Care Orthodontia Policy orthodontic services are only covered if a patient has a severe handicapping malocclusion or special medical conditions.
There are two dental carriers for Medicaid, DentaQuest and MCNA. Dr. Ainsworth only takes DentaQuest, but it is very easy to change. It should not affect your dentist as most dentists take both carriers. If you are not sure who your carrier is, please call us and we can check that for you. If you need to change you carrier you can call 1-800-964-2777. It usually takes 3-4 weeks to change.
Dr. Ainsworth and his staff would be delighted to help you navigate this process so please call us today to schedule your New Patient Exam.
